Forty-eight percent of surveyed adults use social media platforms at least once a day, an increase of 5 percentage points from 2016. In addition, more than half (53%) of respondents report that their relationship with friends and family has improved because of social media usage, while just over one-third (35%) say it has worsened.

Additionally, millennials are leading the charge when it comes to social media usage. Eighty-one percent of 18-34 year olds report using social media platforms at least once a day, compared to just 55% of those aged 45+. Usage among Gen Xers (those aged 35-49) is also high at 72%, but slightly lower at 61% for boomers (those aged 50+).

So why are millennials so hooked on social media? According to the survey respondents, the main reason is interacting with friends and family online. Nearly two-thirds (64%) say this is the primary benefit of using social media, followed by staying up-to-date on news/events (56%), and getting information about products and services (44%).
